Our Story

Hand Job Body Surf Boards was founded out of the love for the ocean, love for being creative, having fun in the sun and mostly out of a passion for body surfing.

Jono Knight used his first hand plane at the age of 12. His father purchased a hand board and Jono and his brothers and sisters spent many happy hours learning to bodysurf on Durban’s beaches.

35 years later, after living abroad in the UK for 10 years, we moved back to South Africa. I discovered my Dad’s old hand plane amongst my moving boxes. We settled in Cape Town, close to Muizenberg’s Surfers Corner and I was very excited to get back into body surfing again. The old board was 50 years old, battered and bent, but still managed to perform well.

I decided to craft my own board and so started experimenting with various materials and finishers, with the vision of creating a light weight, high performance, sexy looking board. I have a couple of boxes filled with various shapes and finishings – failed experiments if you will.

Two years later and the “Hand Job” was born. Hand moulded and finished, a high performance hand board suited to handle most surf types and due to a design similar to a RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) from the Irish Navy, capable of providing maximum lift whilst on the wave.
